| Description: A book of 25 gelatin silver prints of three mining concerns of U.S. Steel's Tennessee Coal, Iron and Railroad Co. These images (though ostensibly used for documentary purposes) are aesthetically impressive as well. Good tonalities, strong compositions, and sensitively arranged forms make nearly every entry here a winner. Highlights include sunlight glancing off the patinated surface of a dolomite crushing machine; and the long, diagonal lines of a "slope belt drive house" (both in Birmingham, AL). Three U.S. Steel facilities were featured in this volume: The Wenonah Ore Mine, the Dolonah Dolomite Quarry (Birmingham), and the Concord Coal Mine (Bessemer, AL). Behemoth U.S. Steel was in its heyday when these pictures were taken—the company employed 340,000 workers in 1943. Full documentation appears on verso of each print. Good condition.
