Description: Buffalo Heads Outside Taxidermist's Office, Kansas Pacific Railway, 1874 9 x 7 inch Vintage Albumen Print, Mounted on Original Board Text on recto reads: "On the Kansas Pacific Railway. No. 2. Taxidermist's Department of the Kansas Pacific Railway. Buffalo Heads used for advertising purposes. PHOTO. BY R. BENECKE, ST. LOUIS, MO." By 1874, when railroads were in competition for business, iconic images like this one were used for advertising. Here the promotion is that riders could shoot buffalo for sport from the train. The Kansas Pacific Railroad even had its own taxidermy department. Needless to say, they provided transportation of the kill to riders' final destination. Benecke's work is in the collections of a number of major institutions, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, George Eastman House, and the New York Public Library. This image was used in Ken Burns' film, "The West." Also reproduced in the companion book to the film ("The West: An Illustrated History," Little Brown & Co., 1996, p.263).
