| Description: The forty classic industrial photographs in this album were almost entirely taken by Russell Aikins. They illustrate the manufacturing of wire, from the fine stainless steel wire manufactured in Cleveland’s central furnaces, where special wire receives a heat treatment, is tested and examined in their labs, and the Zinc furnaces of Donora PA, where the production of Zinc (used as a protective coating) is portrayed through dramatic views of the furnaces where the zinc is distilled and condensed into a liquid state. Aikins captures how the molten zinc is drawn from the condensers and poured into molds, forming slabs, which are then loaded on freight cars for shipment. In the Trenton N.J. plant of U.S. Steel’s American Steel and Wire company, Aikins captures the manufacture of wire rope for Elevators in the United Nations building, as well as the wire to be spun into the suspension cables for the Delaware Memorial Bridge. He also illustrates how the wires are treated in molten lead baths, and how reels of wire are examined carefully and finally spun to create wire rope used for cables.
