"Snap at Riverside" by Noburu Ishikawa
"Snap at Riverside" by Noburu Ishikawa
This wonderful group of photographs made between the 1920s and 1940s focuses on nature - a popular theme in Japanese art, which was often an inspiration for the Japanese pictorialists. Many preferred landscape as a subject and used soft-focus effects to differentiate their photographs as artistic.

This material is extremely rare. Earthquakes, natural disasters, fires - as well as the destruction of whole cities during the Second World War - have left few examples of Japanese pictorialist photography.
