Description: This graphically intricate image shows the enclosures and houses on the edge of a canal. Banners printed with Japanese text fly on the shore, and the reflection in the water mirrors the shore-side setting with shadows and sparkles. Hirogane graduated from Tokyo's Commercial High School in 1916 and began working for Mitsubishi Heavy Industries in Nagoya as General Affairs accountant. His professional career allowed him the luxury of pursuing photography. He printed in both silver gelatin and bromoil. His subject matter, both rural and industrial scenes, were photographed around Aichi prefecture. See "Art Photography in Japan, 1920–1940" by Peterson, Ross, et al, 2003. 1
