Description: Civil War era Carte-de-Visite depicting a slave child. It was not uncommon, in order to garner sympathy for the cause of emancipated slave children, to circulate images on cartes-de-visite in the North of children who were the product of mixed-race unions. The children are generally depicted in a proud manner with optimistic expressions, and they are shown in elegant clothes, looking very Caucasian. Kimball was a NY photographer. His information is noted on card verso, along with the following statement: "The nett proceeds from the sale of these Photographs will be devoted to the education of Colored people in the department of the Gulf, now under the command of Maj. Gen'l. Banks." 1
