Description: 'LIFE Photo by Fritz Goro' stamped on verso with caption written by the artist in pencil. Herbert Gehr (1910-1983) was a LIFE Magazine staff photographer. For examples of his work see, "The Great LIFE Photographers," Bulfinch Press, NY, 2004, pp. 190-195. Fritz Goro (1901-1986) was a German emigrant who originally studied sculpture at the Bauhaus Art School before turning his full attention to photography. As a photojournalist he specialized in scientific photography, contributing to LIFE and Scientific American magazines. His work documented significant scientific breakthroughs and illustrated many firsts including still pictures of blood circulation in animals and pictures of the first plutonium ever produced. 1
