| Description: A dramatic study of a Kabuki actor in full dress and mask appearing behind a stylized spider's web. Marvelously linear composition with crisp tonalities. Inscriptions in Japanese in sepia ink on verso let us know that this was the revival of a classic play called "Tsuchi Gumo" or, literally, "Land Spider," adapted to Kabuki from the No play of the same name. The Land Spider is a shape-shifting demon-like character of well-known Japanese lore. 1 |
